Stage 2- Assessment Evidence
Performance Tasks:

  • Have students take turns leading the class in both the Pledge of Allegiance and the National Anthem. Have them explain to the class why we do it each day.
  • Write an informational text about how the flag was made and its symbolism.

Create a puppet of the president and role play with a partner to describe why you (as the president) are a symbol.

Student Self-Assessment:
Create a class "I Can" chart with the goals of the unit on it (say the Pledge of Allegiance, sing the National Anthem...) and put a sticker for each child as they meet the goal.

Stage 3- Learning Plan
Hook: Show students a picture of the symbol or read a book about the symbol. Define the word symbol for children.

American Flag: Watch video of the American flag. Make an American flag being sure to discuss the field, the stripes and the stars and there significance. View example Here. Write an informational text about how the flag was made and what it symbolizes.

National Anthem:


Pledge of Allegiance: Send copy of the pledge home for students to practice.
