Using local historic sites, historical societies, and museums, third graders learn about the history of Massachusetts from the time of the arrival of the Pilgrims. They also learn the history of their own cities and towns and about famous people and events in Massachusetts’ history. In addition, they read biographies of prominent Massachusetts people in science, technology, the arts, business, education, or political leadership in order to learn how they contributed to Massachusetts history.

Imagine that you are a travel guide and someone has contacted you for advice on where to visit within the Massachusetts area. They cannot decide on which region of Massachusetts to vacation to. Your goal is to familiarize them with the area and guide them on the best possible region to travel to. You must use the word bank to appropriately label a blank map of Massachusetts to share with your new client. You will be responsible for labeling the features of a map, along with the regions, major cities, and rivers. Create a brochure that includes the map as well as important features of each region. Your brochure will allow your client to familiarize themselves with the highlights of each region and decide their preference. Make sure to include three to four details that best describe each region and your recommendation.

Write a magazine article that compares and contrast a child’s life today with a child’s life, either Wampanoag, Pilgrim or Puritan. Plan your article using a graphic organizer to outline your research.


Write a letter from the point of a European settler (a Pilgrim or Puritan) to your family back home. Use the information from the texts you have read about the settlers. Include details of the journey and details of your daily life.
The American Revolution and Important Figures (4 weeks)

#1:The students will show what they have learned about writing an opinion and supporting it with facts and details. Students will choose to “be” a real person in the 1770’s, such as Paul Revere. Students can also make up someone from that time, such as a child living on a farm just outside Boston or a child of a wealthy family in Boston. Students can choose to be themselves now or as a time traveler. They will include information for at least one of three important events leading to the Revolutionary War in their diary entry-The Boston Tea Party, The Battle of Lexington and Concord, and The Battle of Bunker Hill.

#2:
Biography of a leader of the Revolutionary War. Students will create a poster of either John Adams, Paul Revere, Sam Adams, or John Hancock. They will include the major roles that their leader played in the events leading up to the Revolutionary war.

#3:
Write a class magazine or newspaper in which students or groups of students write articles about major people and events leading to the American Revolution.

You have been asked by the historical society to describe famous sites and businesses within Melrose and show how they have changed or affected your town. Create a brochure that will explain a famous building/monument/ or site, business or industry, and a good/service.
